Can Water Mitigation Help Prevent Cupping for Flooring In My Amityville Home?
7/14/2021 (Permalink)
No matter how your property is impacted by water, you can call on our technicians day or night for help.
SERVPRO Expedites Water Extraction to Prevent Expensive Water Damage Repairs
A hardwood floor may be your dream floor treatment. However, exposure to significant volumes of water can damage the floor irreparably, forcing you to strip it down. However, appropriate water mitigation efforts can help you avoid such costly outcomes.
For water mitigation to help Amityville homeowners adequately, a timely and skillful approach is essential. SERVPRO teams can provide both since we have highly trained and IICRC certified water restoration technicians. Our crews are also equipped with technologically advanced tools enabling us to respond to any water loss situation.
The Most Common Water-related Losses We Handle Include:
- Water clean up
- Water damage repairs
- Burst pipes
- Flood restoration
Because of the numerous joints where the floorboards meet, water seeps into the floor cavities if left to stand for long periods. The seepage and absorption are rarely uniform, leading to physical deterioration such as cupping, in which the edges of the floorboards are lifted.
Various mitigation processes can help prevent permanent damage. Our SERVPRO technicians combine the use of regular extractors and drying mats removing surface water as well as any moisture that penetrates beneath the floorboards. When done in time, the removal efforts ensure that no cupping occurs.
Since it is not always possible to respond in time, other solutions may be necessary. Our SERVPRO technicians sand out the slightly raised edges restoring any changes to the floor surface, “Like it never even happened.”
SERVPRO of Amityville / Lindenhurst delivers quality water mitigation services. You can reach us at (631) 319-1680 when you need assistance.

Worried About Uncertain Outcomes of Water Restoration?
3/17/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO has the equipment to measure moisture in your home and determine the best drying standards.
SERVPRO Uses Procedural Approaches for Quantifiable Restoration of Amityville Properties
After water leaks into your home and you start mitigation processes such as mopping off standing water and airing the premises, you might not be sure whether these steps are beneficial. Although professional water restorers may follow similar approaches when restoring a property, specific evaluation techniques are applied to gauge effectiveness.
Assessing the level of water ingression is essential before attempting water restoration in your Amityville property. Having an accurate estimate helps in setting realistic drying goals and also ensures there is sufficient restoration equipment. Our SERVPRO technicians use several approaches to get the correct assessments, including:
- Measuring humidity levels in indoor air using hygrometers
- Measuring the depth of pooling water
- Checking moisture content in affected materials
Ascertaining moisture content in materials is the most challenging aspect since materials differ in their physical composition. For wood, it is easy to determine moisture levels using moisture meters and translate the results. For instance, a reading of 10% moisture content in wood means that in 100 pounds of wood, there are 10 pounds of water. For non-wood materials, there is a relative scale. With such tools, our technicians can provide accurate estimates.
SERVPRO of Amityville / Lindenhurst can provide precise projections of the outcomes to expect from water restoration. Call us at (631) 319-1680.

When looking for Lindenhurst, you will find this village within Suffolk County in the state of New York. It is located in the town of Babylon and along the southern shoreline of Long Island. According to the United States Census taken in 2010, Lindenhurst, NY, had a population of 27,253 people. The official title of this village is the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst, and it has a total area of about 3.8 square miles, with 0.1 square miles being water.
There is a Lot Behind the History of Lindenhurst, New York
Lindenhurst's roots go back to the Massapequa and Secatogue Indian tribes when they used to forage the Lindenhurst woods for food. This area was called Neguntatogue at the time, which meant "forsaken land."
The first white people to discover the area were English-origin farmers from Huntington. They started to venture into the Lindenhurst region while looking for salt hay, which grew in abundance throughout the marshlands. In 1657, a Huntington farmer named Jonas Wood signed a treaty alongside his neighbors with the Secatogue Indians that helped procure five necks of land. This included Venetian Shores, which was then called Santapogue Neck, and Little Neck, which is located in the western area of the Lindenhurst Canal.
Even though the 1600s saw Huntington farmers coming to the region, no settlements had yet been established. Jesse Ketcham and his wife built the first home in the 1780s, which was located in the former Temperance Brush, which is now known as the location east of Washington Avenue on Montauk Highway. Some of the other earlier settlers to the region were the Smiths, Fleets, Strongs, Van Nostrands, and the Bartos. All of these families lived relatively quiet farming lives until the South Side Railroad went up around 1867.
Prior to the turn of the 20th century, there were many businesses and factories that flourished in Lindenhurst's village. The village growth made way for a fire department, which was when "Breslau Feuer Wehr" was formed in 1877. The name was later changed to Breslau Engine Company four years later. At the same time, Union Hook & Ladder was formed, followed by Library Hose Company in 1884. These three companies, which included manpower of 44 residents of the region, became the Breslau Fire Department in 1885.

Hurricane Sandy – A Notable Weather Event in the Lindenhurst Area
The eastern coast was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, which touched down on October 30, 2012, in Lindenhurst and subsequently flooded a good portion of the streets throughout the village. Along the southern part of the Montauk Highway, water got reported up to six feet in height. Unfortunately, several fires also broke out in the area, which caused firefighters to address blazes while battling water levels that ranged from four to six feet. Additionally, people throughout the northern side of Lindenhurst went without power for more than a week. The water from the flooding due to the hurricane began to subside after about two days.

Incorporated in March 1894, the village became a top-rated tourist destination due to the larger hotels along the bay and significantly-sized homes in the region. It is said that Annie Oakley was a frequent guest of a vaudevillian named Fred Stone and that Will Rogers also stumbled across Clocks Boulevard from Stone. How SERVPRO Can Protect Amityville Attractions from Water Damage

When the Horror of Water Damage Strikes Your Amityville Home--SERVPRO Is There to Help!
With many unique points of interest, Amityville and Suffolk County are attractive tourist destinations.
Amityville is one of the most recognized, or possibly feared, municipalities in New York. Its fame as it is connected to a grisly crime and subsequent globally embraced horror movie franchise brings in a steady stream of tourists and visitors all on its own. When you consider the multiple otherattractions and historic structures here in the Long Island community, a town of under 10,000 residents can feel much larger and more developed.
Lauder Museum
Protecting Amityville's history and the nearby communities that makeup Babylon here in Suffolk County has fallen to the Amityville Historical Society. Among the most comprehensive of their efforts, records, and examples of educating travelers and locals about the colorful histories of Long Island, is the Lauder Museum.
Many events and eras have influenced and developed Amityville to become what it has, and these are the exhibits and artifacts that you can expect to see in the museum. Scaled models of the famous Suffolk County structures, 19th-century replicas and parlors, historical artifacts from Amityville's most famous (or infamous) residents and visitors are just a portion of what can be discovered within this free museum in town.
The Triangle
Many of the structures throughout Suffolk County are more than 100 years old, including one of Amityville's most recognizable buildings, The Triangle. The plot of land is created by the intersecting streets and town elements Broadway, Park Avenue, and Ireland Place. The field left was enough to construct the building that still exists on the property in 1892. In the mid-1990s, the Triangle and its newer gazebo at the northern point became officially recognized as a continual and community monument dedicated to those who have served Amityville throughout the years.
Amityville Beach / Sand Island
While not every part of the year is beach season here in the northern United States, the late spring and summer months can offer favorable climates for the sun and sand. The shore at the edge of town is one of the attractions for travelers to Long Island, making shops and boardwalk activities highly popular between May and September.
Sand Island might not have many structures and homes that our SERVPRO professionals might need to restore or clean when disasters like Hurricane Sandy in 2012 strike. However, it is still a desirable location for those that do not mind the short boat ride to the island south of Amityville Beach for privacy and quiet.
The Amityville Horror House
Perhaps one of the most famous structures in all of Long Island, the house intertwined with the infamous Amityville Horror film franchise, book, and true crime, has been a hot spot for tourists since the late 1970s. The story behind the original horror film added credibility to the legend of paranormal activity that influenced inhabitants. George Lutz and his family lived in the house on Ocean Avenue for nearly a year before claiming they needed to escape the property to save their lives.
The house itself has one of the most iconic looks recognized by generations of movie-goers. Despite municipal officials attempting to slow the traffic to the area by changing the name of the street or the house number, it has done little to deter avid fans from taking a shot of the house as they drive through the neighborhood. Structural changes and upgrades to the 5-bedroom Dutch Colonial residence have changed the recognizable half-moon windows from the third floor with traditional shuddered windows to match the rest of the property better. Despite changes to the exterior, fans still find their way to the house for photo opportunities.
Famous Influences on Amityville
Despite the infamy that Amityville embodies with the controversies surrounding the events happening in the Ocean Avenue Dutch colonial, there are positive ties back to the community from Hollywood and the world of professional sports as well. While many of the most prominent and recognizable names raised or that lived part of their life here in our Long Island community are accounted in the Lauder Museum, these individuals help to shine a brighter light on our town in each era of our history.
Modern celebrities and professional athletes like Alec Baldwin and Mike James continue to inspire and influence Amityville residents today. Basketball courts where Mike James first honed the skills that would take him to the NBA's greatest stages have been renamed in his honor here in town. In years past, the village became an attractive option for history's most infamous and legendary names like sharpshooter Annie Oakley and mafia boss Al Capone.
What Can Be Done About Water Damage in Amityville Basements?
Most of the basements constructed underneath older homes in Amityville were designed to be cellars that can keep vegetables from perishing quickly in certain seasons. Because of this, the temperature and conditions were designed to cool and moist. Even more than the persistent threat of groundwater, the basement is where the hub of plumbing services, the water heater, and even washing appliances are located
When under-insulated pipes become exposed to the cold snaps of the winter, or aging copper and lead plumbing pulls apart at weakening connections, the resulting water damage could be substantial for your property. Standing water presents immediate risks for exposed structural elements like wood framing and other porous components. Removing this surface pooling involves multiple tools ranging from various vacuums with wands and attachments to more formidable submersible pump options.
Removing water from the flooring is one considerable water mitigation step to take for damaged homes in the area, but eliminating the risks of secondary damages like mold growth hinges on thorough drying practices. As general contractors licensed through New York, we can offer a wide range of practical actions like controlled demolition, weep hole drilling, and plumbing repairs to make water damage incidents "Like it never even happened."
Water disasters can happen without warning in your basement, but our SERVPRO of Amityville / Lindenhurst team can respond fast to help. Contact us 24/7 at (631) 319-1680.

Water Removal
At some point in your life as a homeowner, you may need professional water removal services in Amityville to get your house back in order with minimum expense. Our team of trained servicemen and women at SERVPRO can help to limit losses by acting fast to negate the effects of water on the structure and contents of your home. Using innovative techniques, we can remove not only excess moisture but also prevent unnecessary damages from occurring. Sometimes, we can restore a property without causing further abrasive harm to items like carpets, floorboards, and contents.
One non-invasive technique for drying floors is by using flat lay drying or large 6-mil thick poly sheets. Flatlay drying may be useful in situations where flooring is exposed to moisture for less than 72 hours. This method does not require the removal of floorboards or clearing of the affected area before use. We find that Amityville homeowners can benefit from the convenience of non-invasive drying techniques, which can also cause less damage to the surrounding area from a spill and less inconvenience to a homeowner.
Flatlay drying works on the principle of creating a smaller, contained drying area within the affected structure. SERVPRO technicians seal the affected area using waterproof tape and plastic sheeting. In effect, we create a "tent" that reduces the treatment area while also limiting the circulation of excess moisture to other areas of the structurer. We can then fit a rapid air mover with a hose inside the smaller drying zone. Doing so allows us to decrease drying times and gain greater control over psychrometrics- the balance of temperature, moisture, and air. At SERVPRO, our restoration services are focused on providing techniques that suit each individual job-site, and each Amityville homeowner.
Water Cleanup
Restoration services like ours offer water cleanup for Amityville residents that encompass both drying and damage prevention. Moisture contains microbes that, without proper cleaning, can deteriorate into serious property issues like mold growth, rot, or malodors. When water is spilled in your home, it not only introduces microbes into the affected area but also interacts with soiling that may have been unnoticeable previously. SERVPRO restoration services can dry your property thoroughly while cleaning and disinfecting the area.
Areas that may be of particular concern to Amityville homeowners could be carpets, which, after exposure to moisture, can cause the fibers to become flat or lifeless. SERVPRO has a full-range of topical treatments for carpets that can help to enhance fibers, and most can be applied to both wet and dry fabrics. Usually, when applying topical treatments, your SERVPRO technician can mix in deodorants as well as anti-microbial treatments to further protect your home.
Valuable fabrics in the property may be only suitable for dry-cleaning. SERVPRO can use solvent-based topical treatments like Upholstery and Carpet Guard Plus to dry-clean only fabrics or on natural fabrics to reduce drying times for Amityville homeowners. Our water-based topical treatments cover leather, vinyl, rubber, and plastic as well as water-safe fabrics. SERVPRO can also apply fire-retardants for synthetic or natural fibers. Whatever items you may have in your home during a water-related emergency, we have the correct treatments and cleaners to bring your Amityville home back to a preloss condition. For atypical drying, we can recommend a third-party to ensure our customers receive the best service possible.
Water Damage
You may require restoration services for water damage in your Amityville home after large quantities of water have entered, or there is a fault with your internal plumbing and appliances. These situations can deteriorate quickly without due care and attention, especially when fabrics or contents are affected.
In some cases, a longstanding water issue may only become apparent at a later stage. You may notice yellowing, odor, or discoloration of paintwork. You should always seek a responsible restoration service to address the immediate damages and prevent further harm.
SERVPRO technicians are equipped to remove large quantities of water from the home as well as providing vital cleaning and drying services. The most effective method of limiting damages is by drying a structure using extractors, air-movers, and dehumidification equipment. However, once immediate damage risks are under control, SERVPRO can provide a resolute cleaning plan to get your Amityville home back to its preloss condition, "Like it never even happened." Our service trucks are equipped with both machinery and cleaning chemicals to cover all aspects of the water restoration service. Trained in the best practices and guidelines of the IICRC--Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, assures our customers of top-tier services.
Reversing staining or soiling can be achieved using efficient cleaning equipment alongside specialized chemical cleaning agents. SERVPRO technicians are adept at finding the right cleaning solution for each problem they encounter. Carpets can be shampooed, treated, and then mechanically cleaned using rotary floor machines. This equipment can also be applied to non-fabric flooring to ensure any residual staining left behind by water is fully restored.
Storm Damage
Storm damage in your Amityville home can strike at any time, causing excessive flooding. These scenarios can often become complicated by the contamination levels of floodwater, which is known in restoration services as a Black Water emergency. SERVPRO is a fully-licensed black water restorer and can perform the steps required to return your home to a clean, safe environment that is free from harmful human pathogens up to the disinfection level. You can contact us on our twenty four hour emergency line to arrange a service as soon as possible after flooding.
The complications arising from water contamination can result in elements of structure, carpeting, contents, and valuables becoming infected with potentially harmful substances. These substances may include raw sewage, animal carcass, herbicides as well as pesticides. Unfortunately, in many cases, items of the home need to be replaced to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Items that are primarily affected are those made from porous materials such as drywall, fabrics, wall-paper, carpeting, and some furnishings.
Porous items are more susceptible to irreparable damage because they can absorb contaminants in moisture. SERVPRO can perform controlled demolitions of structural components like drywall during the restoration service. These items must be sealed inside biohazardous waste bags and disposed of in a proper waste facility. We can then disinfect the remaining areas of the home using industrial cleaners before replacing infected materials with new, clean materials. Our restoration service incorporates deodorization of the home to tackle any lingering malodors that remain.

When you experience water damage in your Lindenhurst property, it is best to call the professionals as soon as possible. Water may come in through a broken pipe above or dribbling from a bathroom in the unit next door. These issues can cause damage in the form of water-stained ceilings, moisture behind the baseboards, and warped flooring.
Act Immediately
Mold spores are everywhere, which can make them challenging to eliminate. While they are harmless when inactive, their omnipresence is activated when excessive moisture enters the equation. These spores transform from harmless to potentially dangerous, leading to the cause of a range of health effects. If your home encounters water damage, get help from the professionals as soon as possible. SERVPRO technicians can get to work before microbial growth starts to take hold.
Once you call SERVPRO for water damage help, we deploy our trained technicians right away. We have certification through the IICRC (Institution of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification), and our team is ready to get to work returning your living space to the preloss state.
After arrival, our team uses thermal imaging camera technology to detect any water pockets from the leak to help determine all areas for remediation. We can remove baseboards and cabinets to access the wall cavities for drying . Our technicians then remove any damaged ceiling tiles or drywall impacted by water. We can also remove damaged insulation that may be present within the walls or ceiling.
Following the initial detection phase, we bring drying equipment into the home. Technology such as air blasting tubes, ventilation fans, air movers, dehumidifiers, and heaters help to dry out the excess moisture. After drying is complete, we validate with meters and an inspection that our drying goals have been achieved. This is crucial to help the proliferation of mold or continuing material degradation.

Water Damage Amityville – Moving and Storing Contents
Water leaks can cause a great deal of disruption, not to mention damage to flooring, walls, and the contents of a client's home. Many events are relatively small in terms of the amount of water. The client can turn off the main water valve to the home or at least stop the leak before too much water spreads throughout the home. Even with small amounts of water, entire rooms may require water removal and cleaning as well as your contents removed.
SERVPRO crew chiefs have a great deal of experience dealing with water damage events in Amityville. The team understands that the client wants their home restored as fast as possible with minimal disruption. We aim to provide this service and meet the customer's expectations.
Where Should Your Contents be Stored
We prefer to move items after being cleaned and dried to another part of the home. Your contents could be moved to another room or even the garage while restoring your home. Moving items within the home is the preferred approach since it minimizes the time required to complete the job. Also, there is less chance of damage while in SERVPRO's staging area.
Mats are always laid down on your floors for protection and avoid transferring moisture and soiling to unaffected areas. Furniture is placed on blocks to avoid marking the floor or transferring moisture.
Moving Heavy Items
We often move heavy items to another room. For example, if the water damage is in the kitchen, the fridge may need to be emptied to avoid spillage inside it and moved to a dry location. We use protective floor mats while moving the fridge as well as protecting the floor in the storage location. We make sure that your perishable items are placed back inside the fridge and that the fridge is always plugged in so it can continue doing its job. The same applies to freezers if affected.
SERVPRO looks after all of your needs and returns your home to its original condition, "Like it never even happened."

Our Specialists Discuss The Dangers Of Improper Water Cleanup In Lindenhurst

We are available 24/7 by calling (631) 319-1680.
Risks Of Improper Water Cleanup In Lindenhurst Homes
As much as our professionals have always encouraged and believed in the competency of our customers and the residents of the Lindenhurst area, the cleanup and drying of a water loss incident is not as straightforward as it may seem. The longer that one of these situations waits for resolution, the worse it becomes. This spreading damage is not always apparent on the surface, however. Often conditions inside of affected and saturated materials are far worse than what the visible portions of the structural elements might suggest.
With the employment of the right equipment and practices, you can accomplish even complex water cleanup in Lindenhurst homes. Failure to adequately dry up damaged areas and materials, however, can lead to more severe consequences. Our SERVPRO professionals have sophisticated equipment to check on the progress of drying efforts throughout mitigation and recovery, which can help to identify moisture pockets and present dampness. There are three primary risks to inadequate cleaning and drying:
Structural Deterioration
Prolonged moisture damage can allow for an almost continual degradation and deterioration of exposed and saturated materials.
Microbial Growth
Another considerable risk of poorly managed water cleanup is the facilitation of mold and microbial growth.
Costlier Recovery
When you combine the first two reasons, and not even addressing your likely need for professional restoration like our SERVPRO team provides, the damage to your home becomes a much costlier situation to recover than it might have been initially.
The better you can understand the risks of improper cleanup, the more prepared you can become to ensure the job gets done the first time correctly. If you are ever in doubt, you can count on our SERVPRO of Amityville / Lindenhurst team. We are available 24/7 by calling (631) 319-1680.

SERVPRO's Advanced Detection Equipment Can Help to Mitigate Water Damage in Amityville Properties
Fast Drying Solutions for Damp Amityville Basements
As a part of the Long Island area, Amityville residents are all too familiar with the damp and moist conditions common to basements and cellars. Regardless of the time of year, and even without situations like flooding, this lower level of the property can still end up damaged without the appropriate response from qualified professionals. Our team has the expertise to address not only the immediate effects of this situation but also the source of the moisture and dampness to prevent recurrences in the immediate future.
Persistent moisture can lead to secondary harm like microbial growth on top of the water damage that your Amityville home can experience. In many cases, homeowners are unaware of how severe the situation has become due to the light foot traffic that basements and cellars can often receive. Once the damp conditions get discovered, it can often be after mold has started to form or structural and material degradation has already started to take root.
Our SERVPRO professionals have multiple options for fast drying solutions in damp basements. The more efficiently that our team can address moisture and dampness, the less likely conditions like mold growth, foul odors, and weakening materials can persist. Often this process must begin with a full inspection of the affected areas, including the use of our moisture readers, detection tools, and thermal or infrared imagery. These can identify moisture pockets that exist out of sight to indicate sources of damage as well as where focused drying efforts are necessary. We can also suggest means of preventing future damp conditions in your basement.
Also, our SERVPRO team arrives with multiple high-velocity air movers, desiccant dehumidifiers, and even Low Grain Refrigerant (LGR) dehumidification units to begin pulling moisture out of the environment quickly and consistently. We monitor the success of these drying efforts with our thermal imagery cameras and moisture content readers. We establish a baseline moisture content level, and when that is achieved, the area can be considered dry.
Wet basements are more familiar to the area then many homeowners might believe. There can be significant consequences to allowing this moisture to persist, damage to your structure, and potential health effects can be enough to reach out to our SERVPRO of Amityville / Lindenhurst rapid response team. If you want to make water damage “Like it never even happened,” call (631) 319-1680.
